Study: Android App Authentication Bug Affecting 99% of Users

Researchers from ULM University have found a security flaw similar to sidejacking in Google’s Android operating system affecting some 99.7% of the platform's users. The flaw is in the ClientLogin API, and according to the report, it could allow hackers to steal contact lists, calendar events, and other sensitive data.

Their research stemmed from a blog post on Freedom to Tinker from a few months ago, where Dan Wallace detailed an Android sniffing demonstration he did in an undergrad computer science class on an open network. He discovered that Google properly encrypts data traffic for Gmail and Google Voice, but that Google Calendar could be easily eavesdropped upon and even impersonated. Twitter, he said, does everything in the open, but uses 0Auth signatures, which makes it difficult for a third party to forge tweets. Likewise, Facebook is equally open. While Facebook offers full time encryption on the Web, this appears to not be supported by Android, leading Wallace to believe that an attacker could inject bogus posts onto Facebook.

The ULM researchers, Bastian Konings, Jens Nickels, and Florian Schaub go one step further, claiming that not only are the above attacks possible, but that in theory, any Google service using ClientLogin APIs, whether on an Android device or not, could be vulnerable. ClientLogin is used for authentication of installed applications. The problem, they say, is that these services are transmitting authorization requests in plain HTTP, and are therefore vulnerable to auth token attacks. The researchers claimed that their sniffed tokens were valid for several days, which could make it easy for hackers to setup a wifi access point with a common SSID on an unencrypted network and collect large amounts of auth tokens for use at a later time from a different location.

The dangers of this sort of vulnerability go beyond the potential loss of personal and sensitive information. An attacker can leverage this bug to launch more subtle social engineering attacks; their example is that “an adversary could change the stored email address of the victim’s boss or business partners hoping to receive sensitive or confidential material pertaining to their business.”

As of May 20, Google announced their intention to release a transparent fix that does not require an Android OS update. However, the researchers note that this fix will not prevent the reuse of already captured tokens. So they recommend that anyone who suspects a compromise may have taken place should change their Google password, which will render those auth tokens useless.

For more information on this issue and for recommendations on how developers, Android users, and Google can do to avoid these sorts of issues in the future, you can find the entire report here

JP Performance Motorsport seals deals with Touch ‘n Go and RTM to make SUPER GT history

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 MAY 2011: In conjunction with the 2011 AUTOBACS SUPER GT Round 3 Sepang, JP Performance Motorsport (JPM) revealed the sponsors for the SUPER GT at last Saturday’s event at Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang. And, when JPM does something, they like to do it BIG!

For the first time in the company's 14-year history, Touch ‘n Go will be making this sporting event completely cashless. With the tagline “Life in the Fastlane”, it only seems natural for Touch ‘n Go play a key role in the SUPER GT festivities.

“We are extremely excited with our participation as the Official Electronic Payment System provider for the SUPER GT 2011 Series Malaysia. It is truly in line with Touch ‘n Go's tagline ‘Life in the Fast Lane’,” said Puan Hasni Zarina Mohamed Khan, Chief Executive Officer of Touch ‘n Go Sdn Bhd.

The SUPER GT tickets come with a FREE SUPER GT Special Edition Touch 'n Go card, which was revealed at the event by Mr. Peter England, Director of Touch ‘n Go Sdn. Bhd. Normally priced at RM 100, they are now available at an early bird price of RM 88 until 31 May 2011. The ticket grants access to the Grandstand and K Stand seats.

Meanwhile, the SUPER GT Motorshow ticket is priced at RM 30, and is made available in the form of the SUPER GT Special Edition Touch 'n Go cards itself; granting the ticket holders access to hillstand B. These cards will be used for all food, beverage, and other merchandise purchases during the SUPER GT weekend. Therefore, all ticketholders are encouraged to reload their Touch ‘n Go cards before coming to the Sepang Track, even though there will be ample reload stations at the Sepang track itself.

“These limited edition collectible cards can also be used at all Touch ‘n Go usage points after the event. On top of that, not only can they reload the cards at the seven conveniently located reload booths to be set up throughout the event; they also can reload their cards at close to 6,500 Touch ‘n Go reload points across Malaysia,” Puan Hasni added.

This is also a preview of future services that will be provided by Touch 'n Go, as in addition to their cards being used for the traditional transportation-related transactions such as toll payments, soon, they will also be utilised at merchants outlets, such as cafes, restaurants and bookstores, to name a few.

JP Performance Motorsport will also sealed a historic deal with the nation’s oldest TV station, RTM. This deal hopes to build motorsports in Malaysia as it gives the public the chance to catch live as well as delayed telecasts of the SUPER GT season. Present to receive SUPER GT mementos was Dr. Ahmad Jailani Muhamad Yunus, Director of Strategic Development and Encik Mohd Roslee Mohd Salleh, Chief Assistant Director of the TV Sports Unit.

For the first time in SUPER GT history, JP Performance Motorsport will be airing the highlights of all the nine rounds of the SUPER GT series on RTM1 and RTM2. RTM is also the host broadcaster for the live telecast of the Sepang race in Japan through FujiTV.

Tourism Selangor is also supporting this year's SUPER GT in their capacity as the Official Tourism Board for the SUPER GT Malaysia 2011. Present to receive SUPER GT mementos was Encik Fazly Razally from the Events Department.

Then, Mr. David Tan, General Manager of Tumasek Pewter was called onto stage along with JP Performance Motorsport Founder, Mr. JP Chin to unveil the coveted SUPER GT winner’s trophy. Tumasek Pewter are the official trophy sponsors of the SUPER GT.

Besides the memento giving ceremony, the Empire Shopping Gallery was transformed into a mini bazaar where people could shop for clothes, trinkets, etc.

Also, super performance cars as well as 25 Renault Megane cars congregated at the event after a convoy around the city. These Renault Meganes are the actual race cars competing in the JPM Megane Cup, which is one of three support races during the race weekend.

"It is the first time the JPM Megane Cup is organised and fans can get closer to the car and know more about it as it is arguably among the fastest of its kind," said race organiser JP Performance Motorsport Managing Director TJ Chin.

Fans not only had a chance to see all the super cars displayed at the event, however, they had a change to meet and speak to Japanese GT Queen, Ayami Sasaki.

The fun did not stop there as the semi-finals of the 2011 SUPER GT Malaysia Queen Pageant Search was also held on that very same day.

"As you know, the SUPER GT is famous for its GT Queens and for the first time, we are holding a SUPER GT Pageant to find our first Malaysian GT Queen who will not only win RM2,000 cash, she will also be sent to Japan for professional race queen training," said TJ.

From the cars to the GT Queens to the concerts, last Saturday’s Final Countdown Party was only a glimpse of what we have in store come June. Come June 17-19, the Sepang circuit will host the only SUPER GT race held outside Japan, and it promises to be nothing short of a spectacular weekend of entertainment.

In their debut role as race organisers, having acquired the rights and awarded the contract to organise the 2011 and 2012 SUPER GT race at Sepang, JP Performance Motorsport is pulling out all the stops in creating a weekend of excitement that appeals to not just racing fans, but fans of cars, music, dance, fashion, food, anime and all things Japan.

"The SUPER GT races are one of the most popular and most watched sport in Japan, and that is because it is more than just car racing. It is an entire package of adrenaline-pumping entertainment - from the support events, the sideshows and carnivals, music and entertainment, and of course, the very beautiful GT Queens as well," said TJ.

The following is a detailed guide on the various electrifying races and entertainment slated for the SUPER GT weekend at Sepang as well as other on-going activities.

MAIN RACES

GT 500

(Qualifying: Saturday 18 June| Race: Sunday 19 June )

The GT500 category will see cars with no more than 500 horsepower. Regulations in the GT500 are considerably looser than most GT classifications, and teams are free to change engines with other models made by the manufacturer, change the alignment of the engine, or add forced-induction systems to models which do not normally have it, however from 2010 onwards all GT500 cars run V8 engines displacing 3.4 liters. The new regulations result in cars that are possibly the fastest GT racing cars in the world and the pinnacle of touring car competitions.

The three top teams in the GT500 category are Nissan, Honda and Lexus, with a few others participating as well.

GT 300

(Qualifying: Saturday 18 June| Race: Sunday 19 June)

The GT300 category will see cars with no more than 300 horsepower racing and pitting it out on the tracks. Famous luxury car models such as Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari will battle it out against top Japanese car makes such as Subaru, Mazda, Nissan, Autobacs, Lexus and others in the GT300 category, making it much more varied in terms of types of cars entered and a racing category that has one of the most car manufacturers participating at the same time. GT300 cars, however, are much more regulated than their GT500 counterparts, because GT300 cars closely resemble road-going versions.

ABOUT SUPER GT

Formerly known as the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC), the SUPER GT Series is a grand touring car race series promoted by the GT Association (G.T.A.). It was first established in 1993 by the JAF (Japanese Automobile Federation) via its subsidiary company the G.T.A. (GT Association).

In order to maintain competitiveness and prevent the spiraling budgets of teams, JGTC imposed strict limits on power, and heavy weight penalties on race winners in an openly-stated objective to keep on-track action close with an emphasis on keeping the race goers happy.

There are two categories for the participating cars: GT500 and GT300 (cars with no more than 500 and 300 horsepower). These power outputs are capped via the use of intake restrictors although some heavier cars are given allowances to run larger restrictors to maintain parity.

GT500

Regulations in GT500 are considerably looser than most GT classifications, and teams are free to change engines with other models made by the manufacturer, change the alignment of the engine, or add forced-induction systems to models which do not normally have it, however from 2010 onwards all GT500 cars run V8 engines displacing 3.4 liters. The new regulations result in cars that are possibly the fastest GT racing cars in the world. The rationale for this was to allow manufacturers to field competitive cars without having to spend large amounts of money for homologation versions of the race car's road car counterparts (although some companies, notably Honda and Nissan, have still developed homologation specials).

GT300

The GT300 category tends to be much more varied in terms of types of cars entered, although GT300 cars are much more regulated than their GT500 counterparts. This is because GT300 cars closely resemble road-going versions. The GT300 series is a racing category that has one of the most makes in the same time in the world.

Top 10 Ways iOS Outdoes Android

10. The iTunes Media Store

While iOS still doesn't allow you to sync wirelessly, you can, at least, use your Wi-Fi (and in some cases cellular data) connection to purchase and download music, video, and books over the air. While Android's not without Amazon's media offerings, Apple gives you access to an enormous library of entertainment that you can purchase in a few taps. Everything you buy is sent to it corresponding app and transferred over to your computer the next time you sync. The process is seamless. When it comes to buying media for your device, there's really no better implementation.

*Personal note: I greatly prefer Amazon to iTunes for several reasons, but I think that Apple's implementation of the iTunes store is far better because of how simple and well-integrated it is.

9. AirPlay

There are plenty of alternatives to Apple's AirPlay, but none that work quite so elegantly and intuitively. Out of the box, AirPlay doesn't really seem all that useful if you don't own other Apple devices but there are actually several ways to make your non-Apple devices AirPlay compatible. Two-tap video streaming that actually works really well is pretty great, and you won't find such a nice solution on Android.

8. Find My iPhone

It's not like you can't roll your own device-tracking setup on Android, but now that Find My iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) is free it's no longer the best paid option—it's just the best. It's simple to use, it's easy to track your phone, and it has even helped people catch criminals when the loss was a result of theft (like this or this, for example). It's been proven effective and costs you nothing. There's not much more you need.

7. A Better Support System

What happens if your Android phone breaks? There are a few answers to that question, but often times it means dealing with your specific carrier. They didn't make your phone and they have many different kinds of devices to support. Neither of those things are in your favor. What about your iPhone or other iDevice? You take it to an Apple Store or call Apple tech support. Often times you can make a Genius Bar appointment and get your issue resolved right away (assuming that problem isn't the total obliteration of the hardware). If you've ever tried to get tech support at a Verizon store, for example, you know how frustrating that can be. Apple's support team—while not perfect—is one of the best there is.

6. Better Battery Life and Management

Over the past few years, Apple's started to consider battery life to be one of the most important features of its products. This is especially evident in the iPad, which contains around as much battery as humans contain water, but it's also Apple's battery management tactics that make this possible. Some may be disappointed that the lack of true multitasking is lost in the name of power economy, but true multitasking isn't all that great when you device dies because it ran out of juice. While it didn't start off that way, the latest batch of devices running iOS will get you through the day (and sometimes longer). That's not always something you count on with Android.

5. iTunes and Tethered Syncing

iTunes is a behemoth of a media manager but it handles a lot of data as it goes from your computer to your iDevice and back again. It has an enormous amount of responsibility for those who do sync with their computers. You can certainly argue that DoubleTwist brings the features of iTunes to Android, but the fact of the matter is that an application needed to be created to bring iTunes to Android. Android is missing iTunes in the same way iOS is missing Android's wireless capabilities.

*Personal note: I really don't like iTunes, but I think it's hard to argue that there's anything that does what it does as well. It is a very ambitious piece of software that doesn't work as well as I'd like it to, but I do appreciate the difficulty of creating something like it. While there are definitely other great music players, there really isn't anything else that can do everything iTunes can do (even if it often fails to do some of those things well).

4. No Crapware

Sure, you can pick up the Nexus S and get a phone with no added applications and have an Android phone without any crapware added by the manufacturer, but most people aren't getting their Android phones from Google. When you buy your Android phone from a particular carrier, you can often to expect a few apps you won't want and can't get rid of. With iOS you just get iOS. While Apple might be a little overprotective at times, their walled garden is not without its upsides. It's nice buying an iDevice with the knowledge you won't get stuck with a Sprint NASCAR app you don't want.

3. A Bigger and Better Variety of Apps

While the iTunes App Store is never going to sell classic game console emulators and other questionable apps—and that's a shame—there is, on average, more money to make when developing for iOS. The downside is that most apps cost a bit of money, but it's rarely more than a couple of dollars. The upside is that developers who make money are more likely to be able to afford to spend time developing. The gold mine that is the iTunes App Store has also attracted plenty of big name game developers who've brought some pretty amazing titles to iOS. Sometimes a little money can go a long way, and it does with apps. iOS has some of the most elegant, polished, fun, and even useful apps. They may be a bit more restricted than Android apps, but it's not like you can't jailbreak if you're looking for more.

2. A Well-Designed, Intuitive User Interface

Whether you like Apple's hardware and software or not, it's hard to argue that they aren't beautifully designed. Apple puts a lot of thought in the design of the interface, from its looks to its ease of use. iOS' user experience is one of the most intuitive. Android can take some time to figure out, and there's a lack of consistency in the way third-party apps operate, but if you give someone an iOS device they'll generally be able to figure out much of the functionality on their own. People are posting videos of their very young children using iPads. Android ends up with sites like this (which isn't representative of the platform and a bit much, but still makes a point). iOS is nice to look at and easy to learn, welcoming pretty much everyone to the party.

1. Consistency

iOS is nothing if not consistent. When you pick up an iOS device, you know exactly what you're getting. This shouldn't come as a surprise from a company like Apple, who likes to control every aspect of their products. When it comes to receiving major feature updates, you get them on a fairly regular schedule. While there's some update fragmentation with iOS, it's only ever been between phones and tablets. With Android, it's between the many, many different phones as well as fragmentation between phones and tablets. Knowing what you're getting and that you'll be receiving updates for at least the next two generations of devices increases the value of an iDevice long past the date of purchase.

CyberSecurity, Fortinet Join Hand To Fight Emerging Threats

CyberSecurity, Fortinet Join Hand To Fight Emerging Threats

KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- CyberSecurity Malaysia has partnered US-based network security provider Fortinet, to fight emerging threats.

CyberSecurity Malaysia is an agency under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Both parties today inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to exchange security information and technical know-how, develop local information technology security expertise while offering real-time online threat intelligence services to the public and private organisations in Malaysia.

Fortinet, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, is a leading provider of network security appliances and the leader of the unified threat management (UTM) market worldwide.

"Cyber criminal activities are on the rise. In the first quarter of this year, there were 3,563 cyber security incidents reported, with 1,273 related to online fraud, including 400 phishing attacks targeting Malaysian banks, said CyberSecurity vice-president (cyber security responsive services), Adli Abd Wahid.

Last year, CyberSecurity received a total of 8,090 cyber security incidents, a significant leap from the 3,564 in 2009.

Adli said following the partnership with Fortinet, CyberSecurity can leverage on Fortinet's platform to share information, create awareness as well fight emerging threats.

Meanwhile, Fortinet's regional director for Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, Datuk George Chang said the partnership will promote security best practices to a broad spectrum of Malaysian organisations.

"It will also bring security awareness to a higher level, which will help enhance the country's competitiveness.

"Changes in business and technology are accelerating the need for a paradigm security shift. Many local organisations are starting to realise that they have to guard against new technologies as much as they have to leverage on them," he added.

According to Chang, Fortinet's site in Kuala Lumpur is one of its main technical centres worldwide, providing round-the-clock threat monitoring and pan-Asia regional support.

50 really useful iPad tips and tricks

1. Create folders

iOS now supports folders. To create a folder all you need to do is tap and hold on an app until they all start to jiggle, then drag the app over another icon and release. Your iPad will create a folder with both the apps in. The folder will be named according to the category of the apps it contains, but you can rename it as you like.

2. Access all running apps

Double-clicking the Home button shows you all the apps that are running on your iPad in a bar along the bottom of the screen. To switch to a running app just tap on it here in this bar. Just swipe the screen downwards to remove this bar.

3. Orientation Lock or Mute?

The internet got mightily upset when Orientation Lock was replaced with Mute on the iPad during the last iOS update. Apple listened, and now you can head to Settings > General to choose between Lock Rotation and Mute.

4. Passcode Denied… DELETE ALL!

If you're carrying around sensitive data, you can now enable a feature that'll erase all the data on the device if someone inputs the incorrect passcode 10 times. Navigate to Settings > General > Passcode Lock > Erase Data.

5. Home Sharing

First, turn on Home Sharing in iTunes (Advanced menu) and on your iPad (Settings > iPod and enter your Apple ID). Next, launch the iPod app on your iPad. In the left column, find the little house with "Library" next to it. Tap on that and then on one of the Shared Libraries. It might take a few minutes to update, but then you can watch and listen to all of that Library's media on your iPad.

6. Control iPad notifications

Have you ever played Tap Tap Revenge on the iPhone? Good, then you know how annoying notifications can be. These messages pop up on the iPad as well. but you can control them. Go to Settings, Notifications, and configure which alerts (and accompanying sounds) will appear.

7. Go VPN

The iPad supports a VPN connection. To configure it, go to Settings, then General > Network. Select the VPN and move the slider to On, then add a VPN configuration with your server and account details.

8. Stop asking to join Wi-Fi networks

If you're fed up of getting bugged by messages asking if you'd like to join this or that Wi- Fi network all the time then head to Settings, Wi-Fi and turn off Ask to Join Networks. You can still join any network that will have you from this same screen, it just won't bug you constantly when the opportunity arises.

9. Turn battery percentage off

Do you find the battery charge percentage distracting? The good news is you can turn it off very easily. Go to Settings, General, Usage and you can turn it off here.

10. Quick volume mute

When the iPad first launched, there was no dedicated mute button anywhere on the device. However, with iOS 4.3 Apple has given you the choice of using the lock switch to mute the sound or lock the iPad's orientation. Either way, a good tip for quickly muting your iPad is to press and hold the Volume-down button.

11. Use an Apple keyboard

Missing a real keyboard? Any Apple Wireless Keyboard will work with the iPad. In fact, your iPad will work with any Bluetooth keyboard. Some iPad cases have a keyboard built in, which can be handy.

12. Connect to an HD TV

You can connect the iPad 2 to your HD television using Apple's new Digital AV Adapter (which connects from your 30-pin Dock adaptor to a HDMI port) or a plain old Apple VGA Adaptor. Both are available from the Apple Store. The iPad 2 supports video mirroring, so your entire Home screen will appear on the TV, not just the videos you play.

13. AirPlay: Stream movies, photos and music

Whenever you see the AirPlay icon on your iPad it means you can stream whatever media you're viewing to your Apple TV, which is usually connected to your living room TV. All you need to do is tap the AirPlay icon (which looks like a rectangle with a triangle in it) and it starts playing automatically - it's so simple!

14. Take an iPad screenshot

You can take a screenshot on your iPad by pressing Home and then the Sleep/Wake button. The screen will flash and you'll hear a click, indicating that a photo has been taken. Your screen shots are saved automatically in your Photos gallery. Here, you can view or email them as you see fit.

15. Avoid underpowered USB docks

The iPad does not charge when you connect it to some USB docks or even certain ports on some notebooks. Instead, plug in to a high power USB port (check you computer's specs, or use a powered USB dock). On some PCs, USB ports on the front of the computer are lower power, so you will need to plug into one on the back.

16. Use Multitasking Gestures

Multitasking Gestures, which utilise four and five finger gestures, are available in Settings only to iPad owners who have installed Xcode on a Mac. You need to buy Xcode from the Mac App Store ($5/£2.99) and install it, then from the Xcode homescreen, select your iPad and click on the Use for Development button. You'll be asked for your developer account details, but if you click on Cancel at this stage it still works.

17. Restrict your Spotlight searches

Swipe left on the Home screen to reveal the Spotlight search. By default it searches everything including songs in your iPod, podcasts, apps and events. To restrict the areas it searches, since you may not want all these categories included, look in Settings > General > Spotlight Search.

18. Add a Google Calendar

Want to add your Google Calendar to the iPad's Calendar app? No problem. In Settings open Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Add an account and tap on Other. Tap on Add CalDAV Account and enter your Google Account credentials (the Server is www.google.com). Exit the Settings app and tap on the Calendar app and all your events should appear. By default all calendars are displayed, but you can tap on the Calendars button to choose which ones are shown.

19. Find My iPhone (or iPad) is now free

Apple's Find My iPad works for MobileMe subscribers, but you can set it up for free on your iPad. In Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars tap the Add Account button and select MobileMe.

If you have an iTunes or MobileMe account then enter it here. Alternatively, tap on Create Free Apple ID. You may need to check your inbox and verify your account now. Return to the MobileMe screen and switch on Find My iPad. Now sign into me.com to see your iPad on a map, or install the Find My iPhone app from the App Store.

20. Use AirPrint

Thanks to AirPrint you can print right from your iPad, provided you've got a compatible printer, of course. If you've got an AirPrint ready printer then you just choose Print from the Share menu for virtually any open document. AirPrint works with the new range of printers from HP, and you can use a Mac app called Printopia (www.ecamm.com) to print to any printer connected to a Mac.

21. Use a Smart Cover

Apple's new iPad Smart Cover (from £35/$39) is a must have iPad accessory - it's not just a dumb cover. When you draw it over the iPad's screen it puts it to sleep for you, and wakes it up when you open it. Also, it latches onto special magnets built into the side of the iPad 2, so it's a perfect fit.

22. Share from Pages

Transferring Pages documents from your iPad by syncing with iTunes on your Mac or PC is a real hassle. It's much quicker to use the Share menu to email the finished document to wherever you need it to be. Also, you can email it as a Word or PDF document if you like.

23. Turn iPad caps lock on

To type a capital letter on the onscreen keyboard you first tap the left or right shift key, then the letter. If you need to type a whole word in caps this can be painful. Save time typing in caps by turning the caps lock on. To do this double tap on either shift key.

24. Copy and paste

You can quickly copy and paste text by tapping and holding down, and then choosing Select to select the exact portion of text you'd like the copy. Next tap Copy, then go to a different app, and tap and hold down again, then tap Paste from the menu that appears. Top tip: To select an entire paragraph of text you need to tap four times.

25. Replace a word

When you hold down on a word to copy it, choose Select, then you will see a new option: Replace. Tap this and, you can see suggestions for alternative words that have similar spellings. It's a good way of quickly correcting typos.

26. Hidden apostrophe key on the keyboard

This is a great tip for any app, such as Notes, Pages or Mail, that you type into using the iPad's virtual keyboard. Rather than having to go to the second screen of the keyboard every time you want to type an apostrophe (which is a real pain) just tap and hold on the ! key and a hidden apostrophe option will appear - then just slide your finger up to access it.

27. Quick quotes

You don't have to move the iPad's second keyboard screen to enter a quotation mark either. Simply tap and hold over the ? key and a quotation symbol appears, which you can select by moving your finger upwards.

28. Add a full stop

Another great keyboard tip for typing in apps such as Pages, Notes or Mail is to doubletap the space bar at the end of a sentence. This adds a full stop and a space for you, which can be enormously time-saving when you're writing long articles.

29. Dim your iBooks

You can lower the brightness setting down to a low level using the Brightness option under Settings. But the iBooks app has its own brightness slider, which you can use to lower the level down more conveniently.

30. Change days

There's no way to swipe to change between days in the Calendar app, but don't forget the navigation bar along the bottom of the screen - this can be used to switch to different days (or weeks/months, depending on the view you've chosen). The current day is always shown in blue, or you can just tap the Today button to return to the current day.

31. Street View in Maps

The Maps app running Google's Street View is one of the coolest features of the iPad, yet accessing it is so confusing few people even know it's there. To access Street View you need to have dropped a red pin on the map (which happens when you do a search). You then tap the red and white icon of a person to enter Street View.

32. Directions in Maps

There's no free sat nav for the iPad, but directions in Maps are a substitute if you're walking, driving or taking the bus. Just tap Directions on the top left of Maps and the iPad even works out where you are right now, then takes you step-by-step through each stage of your journey.

33. Display PDFs

There are two ways to display PDFs on your iPad: you can either email them to your iPad, in which case you get an Open in iBooks button appear, or you can sync PDFs from your Mac or PC via the Books tab in iTunes.

To do this just drag and drop the PDF into iTunes, then when you sync your iPad click on the Books tab and select the PDFs you'd like to sync. In iBooks you click on PDFs in your library to see the PDFs you have ready to display.

34. Camera focus and meter

In the Camera app, tap on your subject to both focus on and meter the light properly. In this shot, notice how the chair is dark and the boy outside is properly metered. You can reverse that by simply tapping on the chair.

35. Get a grip

You'll probably hold the iPad by its sides, but it'll rotate to put the shutter button at the bottom, making you wobble when you reach for it. So use the orientation lock to put the shutter where you can easily thumb it, then just rotate your images or videos afterward in an image editor.

36. Take charge in FaceTime

Once you've started a video call, you can move the picture-in-picture window that shows you by simply dragging it around with your finger.

37. Photo Booth fun

Sure, you're great, but Photo Booth is even more fun if you point it at friends or family. Simply tap the 'twirly camera' icon in the bottom right. to use the camera on the back You can also snap stills by hitting the shutter button, but Photo Booth doesn't do video.

38. Download photos straight from your camera to your iPad

You can't plug an SD card from a digital camera straight into your iPad to view the photos, but you can purchase the iPad Camera Connection kit from Apple. With this device attached you can transfer photos straight from your camera's memory card. Get it from the Apple Store online.

39. Quicker websites

Save time typing web addresses in Safari by using the iPad's ".com" key when typing in a URL. A little-known timesaver is that if you hold down the .com key you get access to a menu that offers a .co.uk and other options too.

40. Quick Safari scroll

You can jump up to the top of any web site - indeed any list - by tapping on the top of the title window. It's much faster than scrolling by hand.

41. Zoom in on websites

You can zoom in on any website by pinching out with two fingers on the screen. This also makes it easier to select words and tap links. To zoom out again, just pinch in with two fingers. Double-tap on any text or image to auto-zoom so it fills the screen

42. Turn on Bookmarks bar in Safari

We all know you can tap the bookmarks icon in the Safari toolbar to access your bookmarks, but you can significantly cut down the number of taps it takes to get to them by turning on your Safari Bookmarks Bar permanently. In the Settings app, tap Safari, then turn Always Show Bookmarks Bar to ON.

43. Clear browsing history in Safari

Need to cover your tracks online? You can delete your Safari browser history in a flash. Just open the Settings app, then tap Safari and tap on Clear History. Note you can also wipe your Cookies and clear your Cache here too.

44. Open Safari links in a new page

You can open links in a new Safari window, rather than always opening them in the current one. Just tap and hold on the link and a pop-over menu appears giving you the option to open the link in a new page.

45. Find text on a page

You can search for a particular word on an open page in Safari. Type your word into the Google search box. You'll see a list of suggestions appear, and near the bottom you'll see "On This Page", showing how many times that word appears on the page. Tap the Find option to go to the first instance of the word.

46. Turn off iPad email alert chimes

You can turn off the chime for new emails. Go to Settings, then General, then Sounds and turn off the New Mail sound. You can also adjust sound levels here.

47. Preview more of your emails

The iPad's Mail app defaults to previewing two lines of each email before you tap on it. Sometimes however it would be handier to be able to see more of an email before loading the whole thing in, especially if you are on a slow connection. To do this open the Settings app, then tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars and change the Preview options to add more lines.

48. Turn off iPad push mail

Most mail accounts default to Push as a delivery mechanism, if available. This automatically 'pushes' any new emails your way as soon as they are available. If you find this annoying or distracting you can set your Mail accounts to check for new messages at intervals, or manually so they only check for new messages when you tap the Refresh button. To turn off Push, select the Settings app and Mail, Contacts, Calendars and choose Fetch New Data, then turn Push on or off.

49. Make an iPad backup

If you want to make sure your iPad's data is properly backed up then you can force iTunes to back it up. When you're conencted to your Mac or PC, open up iTunes and right-click on your iPad in the Devices list and select Back up.

50. iPad is flat and won't charge

If your iPad battery is completely flat then it can take a while for the red battery symbol to appear when you plug it in to charge, indicating that it is charging. Don't panic, just leave it plugged in and wait - the charging symbol will appear eventually.
